General Purpose: Under general
supervision, performs a wide variety of skilled journey-level duties and
tasks involved in the District’s Wastewater Treatment Plants.
Distinguishing Characteristics: The incumbent will perform
a variety of duties and tasks involved in the operation of (2) separate
wastewater treatment plants. The person will be assigned to work weekends
with regularly scheduled days off (2) during the week (Monday through
Friday).
Essential Functions: The omission of specific statements
of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar,
related or a logical assignment to this class.
1. Operate and check various wastewater treatment processes and perform
wastewater laboratory analysis.
2. Observe variations in operating conditions by interpreting SCADA data,
meter readings, physical observations and test results to make recommendations
for process changes.
3. Operate valves and gates; start and stop pumps, engines, and electric
motors to control and adjust flow; and, perform routine maintenance work.
4. Operate automatic sampling equipment and/or physically collect waste
samples for on-site testing or laboratory analysis.
5. Routinely inspect sewage lift stations to determine the need for repair
and/or maintenance.
6. Operate various types of gas detection equipment and atmospheric monitoring
devices.
7. Investigate stoppages in sewer lines.
8. Assist in the operation of various types of sewer system maintenance
equipment such as a vacuum/flusher truck and rodding equipment.
9. Collect data from metering installations and chart recording equipment;
perform light maintenance on metering and recording equipment.
Note: This position serves call
duty requiring the ability to communicate by telephone and a thirty (30)
minute emergency response time.
Knowledge and Ability Required:
• Knowledge of wastewater plant operations with an emphasis on activated
sludge process.
• Ability to perform laboratory testing involved with a wastewater
treatment plant.
• Experience in all aspects of the operation of a wastewater treatment
plant.
• Experience with SCADA systems in controlling wastewater treatment
plant operation, oxidation ditches, sludge centrifuges, Tertiary treatment,
UV/chlorine gas disinfection and laboratory testing (BOD, TSS and coli
forms) is desirable.
License and Certification Required: A
California Driver License with a good driving record along with a Wastewater
Treatment Plant Grade III Certification is required.
Education, Training and Experience:
Graduation from High School or G.E.D equivalent and three years of experience
or any combination of education and experience that would likely provide
the required knowledge and skills.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Lift, carry, push, and pull 50 pounds unassisted and up to 90 pounds with
assistance. Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time. Sit
for prolonged periods of time. Endure exposure to various weather conditions
and wet working areas. Work safely around hazardous machinery, chemicals,
noise from traffic, and various machinery. Ability to work in confined
spaces. Ability to climb ladders and work at heights. Work overtime, nights,
weekends, and holidays as required. May be required to obtain, at District’s
expense, First Aid and CPR certification. Must wear a District uniform
and safety-toed shoes.

Pre-Employment Requirements
All offers of employment are contingent on a satisfactory
background investigation, proof of a good driving record, and successful
completion of a District paid physical. Candidates will be required to
undergo an extensive background search and in-depth review of experience
before continuing on in the process. The background investigation consists
of checking criminal and civil court records, checking driver license
records, contacting previous employers and business or personal references,
and verifying educational degrees and certifications. The final selection
process may also involve other methods of evaluation to determine the
best overall fit with the District’s current and future needs.
A District paid physical examination will be given, which includes drug
and alcohol testing.
Applicants selected for an interview may be required to provide, at their
own cost, a current, original California DMV Driver Record Report.
In accordance with the United States Department
of Homeland Security, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services,
you are required to provide proof of your eligibility to work in the United
States on your first day of employment with the District.
Probationary Period: Current District employees promoted into a
new grade and job classification will be placed on a six-month probationary
period upon assuming the new position. Newly hired employees must complete
a six (6) month probationary period, which may be extended for an additional
three (3) months at the discretion of the District.
